Sometimes it just happens, I guess.

More seriously, though, wtf no savepoint. There's just a few little things the game designers could have added to make this game so much more playable. A few more save points, and a few more clues for the puzzles. The problem with puzzles in games is that they usually only have one answer, and they are less about exercising creativity than they are about searching for the puzzle pieces. Newer and better games have realised that walking around in circles looking for the answer is not fun, nor is randomly combining items in your inventory because the solution is completely illogical (I'm looking at you, The Longest Journey). A good puzzle gives you all the pieces and asks you to put the pieces together, following a logical but tricky set of rules. Far too much of this game is spent on looking for the tiny puzzle pieces and really subtle clues in all the corridors and rooms of the game.
