The M8A1 Assault Rifle is a unique burst fire weapon in Call of Duty Black Ops 2 as it shoots 4 bullets per burst. However, it has very low damage so only if you get all 4 bullets on target will you get a one burst kill (unless you get a headshot for one of the bullets). I rarely got one. However, when you use the select fire attachment and use the M8A1 in Full-Auto mode it is a very good weapon to say the least. This guide explains how to use it well and what the best class setup for it is.
Automatic fire is better than burst and semi automatic fire as with an automatic weapon you have the option to burst fire and fire like a semi automatic weapon whereas if you are locked into either you won't have any of the other modes available. Semi Automatic and Burst Fire weapons tend to be weak at close range, but when you can shoot Full-Auto that effect is negated. So whenever you have the option to use the select fire attachment for a burst or semi automatic weapon do so.
The M8A1 in Full-Auto mode is very powerful up close with hip fire. When you are at close range using hip fire is best. At medium range start with hip fire and then aim down the sights which often gets you an initial hit before the enemy and helps win gun fights. At long range burst fire to keep the little recoil the M8A1 does have in check. Since the M8A1 is an assault rifle you are going to have to use cover to stop enemies from shooting you too easily. Move from cover to cover to advance your position. However, don't stay behind one bit of cover for longer than absolutely necessary, when no more enemies are in sight move on.
The M8A1 is very good at taking objectives, so be sure to go for them aggressively.
The class setup I recommend is the following:
If you are near the objective you tend to be surrounded by lethal and tactical equipment designed to kill you in all sorts of ways. Flack Jacket and Tactical Mask reduces the chances of being affected by said equipment. Since you are going to be aggressive chances are you will be shot whilst you are shooting other enemies. This will cause you to flinch which will offset your aim from your intended target. Toughness reduces flinching.
Semtex is a good option for an aggressive class since it is fast to throw and kill. Concussion grenades can be swapped out for flash grenades depending on your preferences. I preferred using the Fast Mag over a pistol secondary as the M8A1 reloads very quickly already and is much more lethal than any pistol (although that can be said for almost every primary in the game).
Because you are near fast combat, or rather in it, the Quickdraw Handle will allow you to react to enemies appearing out of nowhere much quicker and will help you tend to survive those engagements. Select fire is good since the M8A1 is a burst fire weapon.
