Castlevania (悪魔城ドラキュラ (あくまじょうドラキュラ, Akumajō Dorakyura "Devil's Castle Dracula.") is a gothic horror-themed action-adventure video game series created by Konami. It first debuted on September 26, 1986, for the Famicom Disk System in Japan. The game has players controlling a vampire hunter, Simon Belmont, as he battles his way through Dracula's castle to defeat the legendary vampire.
Hitoshi Akamatsu directed the first game. The series has evolved over time, with contributions from various writers, designers, and composers, including Koji Igarashi, who played a major role in the series' later development.
The series is known for its challenging gameplay, atmospheric design, and later entries’ non-linear exploration, sometimes referred to as the "Metroidvania" genre.
