Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (2005, Sony PlayStation 2) Gameplay Footage with No Audio Commentary
The Castlevania franchise that we all remember and love ended when Koji Igarashi left Konami but his vision for the franchise lived on with the release of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (RotN). As of writing this I have not started a playthrough of Bloodstained RotN but the release of that game got me feeling really nostalgic for the Castlevania franchise; but not for the typical Igavania side-scrolling games. Sure Symphony of the Night was a masterpiece on the PS1 and the GBA/NDS games were amazing in their own right but the game I started thinking about was Curse of Darkness for the PS2. The popular opinion is that Castlevania games do not translate well into 3D. The N64 showed that but I remember enjoying the PS2 entries. I remember Lament of Innocence being pretty good but what I really remember is playing the shit out of Curse of Darkness back in the day. I recall hating it at first but once the weapon/armor crafting and introduction of innocent devils kicked it I was pretty hooked. As I progressed through the game I remember thinking it was the classic side scrolling Igavania formula but done in 3D. Everything was there like the typical feeling of exploration through various interconnecting levels paired with the classic level grinding and boss battles. Revisiting this game was quite the walk down memory lane for me and since it was such a long time since I played it last; everything felt pretty fresh to me. I didn’t do any of the after game stuff but I feel like I definitely played the hell out of all the core stuff and got my Castlevania fix. When the nostalgia strings tug again maybe I’ll come back to do the post-game stuff and try to 100 percent it.
