NOTES
- Chapter 9 contains only one strawberry, the Moon Berry, which is in a secret location near the end of the chapter. The secret path opens up after hitting the electrical box at the end of the (very long) final screen in the final section of the chapter (32:35). This path involves climbing floating blocks that were previously encased in electricity, and it's a long way to the next checkpoint (found at 34:06).
- Chapter 9 has a Golden Strawberry, if you're brave enough to attempt to complete the entire stage without dying. If you reach the end with the Golden Strawberry, you will encounter an additional challenge room before collecting the strawberry and seeing the end cutscene. (This will not be shown in the video guide.)
- A heart gate blocks the path partway through the chapter. It requires 15 crystal hearts to pass.
- The double dash is unavailable for most of the chapter (due to Badeline abandoning you). However, the chapter introduces pink double diamonds, which provide you with a single-use double dash.
- Electrical fields kill you on contact, but all electricity on a screen will disappear when you destroy an electrical box (achieved by dashing into it twice). This may open up paths that were unavailable before.
- Exploding fish are new in this chapter:
-- Landing on top of a fish will refresh your dash, bounce you upward and knock the fish a short distance downward. Press and hold the jump button while landing on a fish to perform a higher jump.
-- Entering the dotted semicircle beneath the fish will cause the fish to explode, blasting you away at high speed. The direction and distance depends on the angle you are relative to the fish (however, you will always be pushed slightly upward). After exploding, the fish will respawn after a few seconds.
-- Fish can be pushed around by springs and moving platforms, and their explosions will trigger block switches.
- Also new are jellyfish parachutes, which slow your decent and allow you to glide around. Press up to fall slower and down to fall faster. You can wall jump while floating.
-- Releasing the grab button will cause Madeline to throw the jellyfish a short distance. While free-floating, jellyfish will bounce off springs and can trigger block switches and buttons. They can pass through spikes and electricity unharmed, but will be destroyed if they hit an energy barrier.
-- There are two important jellyfish moves that must be mastered in order to complete this chapter:
--- Horizontal Jellyfish Dash: While floating, throw the jellyfish forward, drop a short distance and dash diagonally toward it. This gives you a burst of horizontal speed and a moderate height boost.
--- Vertical Jellyfish Dash: While floating, throw the jellyfish against a wall, drop a short distance and dash upward into the jellyfish as it bounces back toward you. This gives you a significant height boost.
- Wavedashing is a skill that must be mastered in order to complete this chapter. There is a detailed tutorial on how to do it partway through the chapter.
