CGR's ON THIS DAY IN GAMING! On September 29, 1996, the N64 launched in North America. The console, despite its quality-driven library of great first-party games, would suffer under Sony's edgier Playstation, the system that was eating up the older 'big brother' demographic. The N64 was also technically outdated, its cartridges now obsolete in an age of CD-Roms, and was furthered weakened by an exodus of third-party talent disgruntled at Nintendo's licensing policies. Regardless, the slimmer catalogue of the N64, and its quality output by developers like Rareware and Ubisoft, kept the console afloat, though Nintendo's glory days were officially behind them.
