NixOS is an independently developed Linux distribution that seeks to improve the state of the art in system configuration management.
On NixOS , the entire operating system, including the kernel, applications, system packages, and configuration files, are created by the Nix package manager.
Nix stores all packages isolated from each other; as a result, there are no /bin, /sbin, /lib, or /usr directories and all packages are kept in /nix/store.
Other innovative NixOS features include reliable updates, rollbacks, reproducible system configurations, source-based model with binaries, and multi-user package management.
While NixOS started out as a research project, it is now a working and usable operating system that includes hardware detection, KDE as the default desktop, and systemd for managing system services.
Now, Timothy DeHerrera and Tom Bereknyei have announced the release and general availability of NixOS 22.05 as the current stable release of this independently developed Linux distribution.
What's New in NixOS 22.05
Dubbed “Quokka”, NixOS 22.05 comes six months after NixOS 21.11 and introduces Nix 2.8 as the default nix package management system, which includes many changes, improvements and performance boosts, as well as so-called experimental “flakes” features. ” which you can read all about here.
Another exciting new feature in the NixOS 22.05 release is the implementation of the Calamares universal installer to help newcomers who want to install NixOS on their personal computers.
The installer starts automatically when booting the GNOME or KDE Plasma ISO images and allows for a one-time setup of a new system.
About Calamares, Janne Heß, NixOS Release Manager, said that:
“Improving the experience for new users is something the NixOS project has been working on for a long time. After all, NixOS is very different compared to traditional distributions. To facilitate the introduction of a new NixOS system, a graphical installer based on Calamares is now provided.”
Talking about GNOME and KDE Plasma ISOs, which are the main NixOS live/install images, in NixOS 22.05 they have been updated to the latest GNOME 42.1 and KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS desktop environments.
Other notable changes in NixOS 22.05 include support for profile-guided optimization in Firefox for a much more responsive web browsing experience, simplified configuration of settings for multiple certificates, the ability to override the packaging configuration consistently, as well as support for module authors to automate the deprecation cycle without disturbing out-of-tree module authors and their users.
Under the hood, NixOS 22.05 is powered by the long-term supported Linux 5.15 LTS kernel series and ships with several updated components including but not limited to systemd 250, PulseAudio 15.0, PHP 8.1, PostgreSQL 14, kops 1.22.4 , Mattermost 6.3 and GHC 9.0.2.
Download and try NixOS 22.05
The NixOS 22.05 ISO image can now be downloaded by going to the distribution's download page .
You can download NixOS 22.05 as GNOME or KDE Plasma live and installable ISO images. While GNOME and KDE Plasma ISOs only support 64-bit systems, the minimal image can also be installed on 32-bit computers.
