On the 20th anniversary of its release to theatres, Aardman Animation Studios have officially announced a long-gestating sequel to their classic inaugural stop-motion feature film Chicken Run is headed for production!
With the original film co-funded and distributed by Dreamworks Animation, Chicken Run 2 will instead find an exclusive global release on Netflix, with the streaming giant securing distribution from Pathe! the other co-funder of the original film, and StudioCanal, Aardman’s current theatrical distribution partner.
While Aardman founders Peter Lord and Nick Park directed the first film, which is STILL the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time, Chicken Run 2 will instead be directed by Sam Fell – the Oscar Nominated director behind Aardman’s Flushed Away and LAIKA’s ParaNorman. Onboard as screenwriters are Chicken Run’s Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell alongside Rachel Tunnard, who wrote the screenplay for 2019’s Military Wives – it comes from a story by the writers and Fell.
It’s currently unconfirmed whether any of the original film’s voice cast will reprise their roles. The original film cast included Mel Gibson, Jane Horrocks, Miranda Richardson, Timothy Spall, Imelda Staunton.
