The Chittorgarh Fort also called Chittorgarh or Chittor Fort is known to be one of the biggest forts in India. It is a well known UNESCO World Heritage Site it used to be the capital of Mewar. It is situated in the present-day city of Chittorgarh. It is located on a hill 180 m (590.6 ft) in height and is spread over an area of 280 ha (691.9 acres) which is above the plains of the valley drained by the Berach River. The fort covers a total of 65 historic structures, that includes four palaces, 19 large temples, 20 large water bodies, 4 memorials and a few victory towers including vijay stambh and keerti stambh. In the year 2013, at the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee that was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Chittorgarh Fort, along with five other forts of Rajasthan, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was collectively known as the Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
In the year 1303, the sultan of Delhi Alauddin Khalji led an army to conquer Chittorgarh, which was ruled by the Guhila king Ratnasimha(Rawal Ratan Singh). Alauddin captured Chittor after a long eight-month-long siege. As per his courtier Amir Khusrow, he ordered a massacre of 30,000 local Hindus after this conquest. Some legends also mention that Alauddin invaded Chittor to capture the beautiful wife of Ratnasimha, Rani Padmini(Padmavati). The legends also mention that Padmini and 16000 other rajput women committed suicide by jauhar (mass self-immolation).
Alauddin Khilji assigned Chittorgarh to his young son Khizr Khan (or Khidr Khan), and changed the name of Chittorgarh fort as "Khizrabad" after the prince.
Chittorgarh, situated in the southern part of the Rajasthan state, 233 km (144.8 mi) from Ajmer, midway between Delhi and Mumbai on the National Highway 8 (India) in the road network of Golden Quadrilateral. Chittorgarh is located where National Highways No. 76 & 79 intersect. The fort rises abruptly above the plains that surrounds it and is spread across an area of 2.8 km2 (1.1 sq mi). The fort is located on a hill 180 m (590.6 ft) high. It is located on the left bank of the Berach river (which is known to be a tributary of the Banas River) and is linked to Chittorgarh (called the 'Lower Town'). Mughal Emperor Akbar also attacked and sacked Chittorgarh fort which was known to be one of the 84 forts of Mewar, but the capital was shifted to Aravalli hills as heavy artillery & cavalry were not that effective.
