[CHTV-Archive]: Reptile 4-pack demo special (incl. Reptile vs Thresh - Dennis Fong) - very rare duel
Welcome to today's special Quake event! In this 4-pack demo game-video package the Quake player Reptile is featured. Reptile was a shinning Quake player in 1998, probably right next to Thresh in terms of skills and success. Reptile is best known for his smooth yet solid movement and great aim. The games featured here are as follows:
(All start times are approximate due to being recorded on different computers in different time zones by different in-game admin officials, so they might not make much sense. I am just reporting the time-stamp on the included demo file)
Game-1: Reptile (pov) All-Stars DM3 Professional Competition Game
Date of game played: June 26th 1998 at 4:28 PM
Game-2: Same as above - 2nd Game
Date of game played: June 26th 1998 at 4:29 PM
Game-3: Reptile (pov) vs Thresh
Date of game played: June 11th 1998 at 5:30 PM
[Notes]: In this extremely very rare match which I have been searching for forever (as it's very hard to find and almost lost, until now that is hehe) - it's the one where Reptile actually defeats Thresh (for the first time in history) in a duel match. I have heard of this match but never managed to find it until now as it was part of my downloaded archives.
Reptile exhibits great movement and aim however makes a mistake and gets fragged thrice by Thresh, just when I was thinking the game is lost (I also noticed discouragement in Reptile's in-game movements as well), Reptile continues to play and actually the game becomes better. He regains confidence and is able to pull a win against Thresh - amazing!!
Game-4: Reptile (pov) vs Unholy
Date of game played: June 12th 1998 at 8:35 PM
[Notes]: Perhaps resting on his laurels too much from the amazing victory from Thresh, in my opinion Reptile doesn't play such a great game in this one (although it's still solid good), with falling too many times in lava and missing many shots. Surprisingly the game ends in a tie - hmm figure that! haha
It's also worth noting Reptile's skill in all these demos, in that in the year 1998 still many ball mice were used (for gaming and competitive gaming as well because nothing else existed at that time). This was some time before the optical mice came to the market in the yearly 2000's. So playing with those (myself included) was not easy at all because they would accumulate dirt and lint and make your aim unprecise so you would have to clean them pretty frequently (every few days maybe) to ensure smooth operation; and also being a ball in a socket, the ball would wobble slightly up and down when you quickly picked up the mouse to rapidly move it and therefore your aim (you can notice the crosshair tremble in-game) would wobble a bit and jump up and down. You can see all these effects from watching these [old] demos. Well so my final point is that despite all this, the great players Thresh and Reptile still had great aim and probably kept these mechanical inconsistencies in mind and compensated for them while playing - amazing skills there guys!! :D
