I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, fan of retro games, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EACH of the video games in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game review parts are just for fun, and are not meant to be definitive, in depth reviews; this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey itself. From Mario games to the Halo series, from arcade games to Commodore 64, PC games to the NES and Sega Genesis, Playstation to the Xbox, let's play those classic retro games that we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...

ChuChu Rocket!
from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChuChu_Rocket!

ChuChu Rocket![a] is an action puzzle video game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. Directed and produced by Yuji Naka of Sonic the Hedgehog series fame, the game revolves around a series of puzzles where players lead ChuChus into rockets, while avoiding KapuKapus. The game also features a competitive multiplayer mode that pits players against each other in a race to collect the most ChuChus while avoiding and leading KapuKapus towards other players.

Originally developed for the Dreamcast and released in November 1999, Chu Chu! Rocket is one of the first successful multiplayer online games on a home console, using the online capabilities of the Dreamcast, along with the Dreamarena service in Europe and, later, SegaNet in North America. Despite the discontinuation of the Dreamcast in March 2001, Sega kept servers for the game live until November 2003, with future versions of the game lacking online multiplayer gameplay.

The game was both a commercial and critical success at launch, despite various issues with online multiplayer, and is constantly cited as one of the Dreamcast's best games by various critics. Subsequent releases of the game have also been received positively. With Sega's move to third-party software development, Chu Chu Rocket! was ported to the Game Boy Advance as a launch title for the system in Japan and North America. Local multiplayer for the Game Boy Advance version was supported by the Game Link Cable. The game was further ported to iOS in October 2010 and Android in November 2011. Third-party servers for the original Dreamcast release were brought online in 2016.

huChu Rocket! is a puzzle-action video game.[1] The basic rules of the game require the player to guide mice, dubbed "ChuChus", into a rocket while evading them from dangerous cats, dubbed "KapuKapus".[2]:8-9 A brief premise is provided in the instruction manual, explaining that ChuChus are living on a space port that is invaded by KapuKapus one day. In their frantic state, the ChuChus begin running around in chaos, and so the player must guide them to their rockets to save them.[2]:2-5 Both ChuChus and KapuKapus run in a straight line, and turn right when they hit walls. A player can place up, down, left, and right arrows on the field of play, redirecting characters if they walk on it. Up to three arrows can be placed by a player at any time; placing a fourth arrow will make the player's oldest arrow vanish, and all arrows fade away over time. If a KapuKapu hits an arrow twice, the arrow disappears.[2]:6-9

There are several modes of play within ChuChu Rocket! including a single-player puzzle mode, a puzzle editing mode, a cooperative challenge mode, and competitive multiplayer modes. In the puzzle mode, the player is provided a limited set of arrows to place on the field to save all the ChuChus in play. The puzzle editing mode allows players to create their own puzzles like this. In the challenge mode, players are given 30 seconds to save the ChuChus in play without any arrow limitations as in puzzle mode. In the competition modes, each player has a rocket and must guide as many ChuChus as possible into their rocket in the time limit. This mode supports up to four players, either in free-for-all or team-based fashion.[2]:10-17

ChuChu Rocket! is notable for being the first Dreamcast online multiplayer game.[3] During the time Sega was operating its servers, players were able to play the competitive modes online, while also being able to upload their custom puzzles and download those made by other users. Players could use an onscreen or physical keyboard to chat with other players.
