Chuck Rock Longplay (C64) [50 FPS]
Developed by Genias and published by Core Design in 1992.
Most people will remember the Amiga version of Chuck Rock, mostly for it's excellent cartoon graphics, animation and audio effects. This is the C64 version, which I didn't know existed and, to be fair, is actually a pretty solid conversion.
Chuck's wife, Ophelia, has been kidnapped by another local caveman, Garry Gritter, who took a fancy to Chuck's lady. In true heroic fashion, Chuck sets out to rescue his wife in a side-scrolling adventure.
Each level is broken into a number of short levels where the objective is simply to navigate from the left of the stage to the exit on the right. Various stone age beasties block your path, but Chuck can bounce them out of the way with his belly, or flying kick them in the face.
It's possible to pick up large slabs of rock and to throw them at enemies, protect your head from falling debris, or to use as makeshift platforms. It's good to see that this mechanic made it across to the C64 version and that it works!
The scrolling and collision detection in this game is very good and the controls are very responsive; something you absolutely want in a platform game. All of this makes navigating the levels a painless experience.
Graphically, I felt the C64 version loses a lot in translation. Sure, Chuck still looks a bit like his 16-bit counterpart, but it just doesn't hold a candle to the Amiga version. The same goes for the sound as there is no in-game music aside from the title screen; there are sound effects, but these are pretty basic.
I suppose that the only problem with the game is that you fight a lot of dinosaurs, but never get to tangle with Garry Gritter himself, which seems strange since he was the one who kidnapped your wife. He probably went to visit the kids in the cave next door...
You can't have everything, so having a playable game is preferable to one that looks great but plays like a dog.
