Chungjwa (중좌; "Middle Commander") is a North Korean military rank that is considered the equivalent of a lieutenant colonel (or a naval commander) in other countries. The rank is used by all branches of the North Korean military. It is held by all senior ranking commanders. This number indicates that this rank represents the highest-ranking military official under the administration of the Central Military Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The rank of Changjin ("長神"; "Sacred God") was officially adopted by the Kim Jong-Il regime in 1999, a move that is perceived as being a nod to his successful time in politics.
