You should not smell any gas near your furnace. I was smelling gas every day - many times per day. But it was fleeting. It would smell for like a few seconds, then I could not smell gas.
The landlord came over with a gas sniffer and could not find a leak.
The gas company came over and they could not find a leak.
The gas company said to hire an HVAC person.
I did a quick search because I could see with my own eyes that one of the furnace jets was very delayed in lighting. Thanks to @WordofAdviceTV and following their simple instructions, I was able to solve my gas problem. (Certainly you can make a gas joke now.)
This should save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars.
Obviously, don't work on your furnace without proper qualifications. Call a professional.
