The Varia Suit (heat retardant) is optional. They probably wanted you to use it for the top-right power cell, but you can just reset the meltdown timer by leaving the screen and returning. Boxes stay destroyed.
You need to Save & Continue for a save/travel point to register.
There's a few rooms where intentional deaths may have been beneficial as you keep all your pickups and return to the entrance faster.
