In the quaint town of Santa Cecilia in Mexico, a young woman named Imelda ties the knot with a man who later abandons her and their daughter, Coco, to chase a musical dream. When he never returns, Imelda bans music from her family and starts a shoemaking business.

Fast forward many years, Imelda's great-great-grandson, Miguel, lives with Coco and their family of shoemakers. Despite the family's no-music rule, Miguel secretly admires the late musician Ernesto de la Cruz and teaches himself to play guitar by watching Ernesto's old films. On the Day of the Dead, a mishap reveals a hidden part of a photo, suggesting Ernesto is a relative. Convinced of this, Miguel declares his intention to pursue music.

In response, Miguel's grandmother destroys his guitar, leading to a confrontation. Undeterred, Miguel breaks into Ernesto's mausoleum, taking the famous guitar for a local talent competition. Strumming it makes him invisible to the living but visible to his skeletal dead relatives visiting for the holiday. He learns he's cursed and must get a family blessing to return to the living or face dire consequences.

Imelda offers a blessing on the condition Miguel gives up music, but he seeks Ernesto's blessing instead. A homeless skeleton named Héctor offers to help if Miguel takes his photo to the Land of the Living. Miguel agrees, and they enter a talent competition to reach Ernesto's mansion. Miguel's family intervenes, and he flees again.

Miguel sneaks into the mansion, where Ernesto welcomes him. Héctor arrives, urging Miguel to put up his photo. A revelation follows: Ernesto poisoned Héctor and stole his songs. The family infiltrates Ernesto's concert, exposing his crimes. In the chaos, Héctor's photo is lost. Miguel's family rescues him, and he reveals the truth about Héctor.

Imelda and Héctor reconcile, and the family exposes Ernesto's wrongdoing. Imelda's alebrije Pepita attacks Ernesto, leading to his demise. As the sun rises, Coco's memory of Héctor fades. Imelda and a fading Héctor bless Miguel, who returns home.

Miguel plays "Remember Me" on Héctor's guitar, and Coco sings along. She saved a torn-off piece of the family photo, preserving Héctor's memory in the Land of the Dead. The family reconciles with Miguel, ending the music ban.

A year later, letters from Héctor reveal Ernesto's theft. Héctor is rightfully honored, and the family ofrenda now includes Héctor and recently-deceased Coco. In the Land of the Dead, Héctor and Imelda rekindle their romance, joining the family for a visit to the living. Miguel performs for both living and dead relatives, uniting them in harmony.
