A pair of neutron stars merged, creating a black hole and a massive burst of energy which was observed by both the Fermi Gamma Ray Monitor and the LIGO/Virgo gravitational telescope. This is the first time a gravitational wave have been matched to a counterpart event in EM Radiation.
The merger was so energetic it created huge amounts of heavy elements and scattered them among the stars, these elements of course are essential to life as we know it.
