Originally released by Konami in the arcades, Combat School is a multi-event "joystick-waggler" that puts you in the boots of a raw recruit entering military academy training; essentially, it's Track n' Field but with a military theme!

The game takes you through a number of different events, from the obstacle course to shooting on the target range. Should you make it through all of the boot camp trials, you will called up for a special mission to rescue a hostage from an embassy siege.

The game also features competitive multiplayer, allowing you to go head-to-head with a friend to see who can earn the most points (or to see who can wear out the micro-switches in their joystick first...).

Overall, the boot camp section of the game stays faithful to the arcade version and retails all of the difficulty; this is the sort of game that you could expect to break a few joysticks on for sure.

However, there is a notable decline in the presentation during the siege level. The character sprites and background art look distinctly amateurish compared to the boot camp stages and it spoils an otherwise decent conversion.

Martin Galway produced the music for this version and there are some nice sampled effects during the title screen, but this is far from his best work (although the arcade machine music wasn't exactly memorable to begin with).

Personally, I never liked games that involved joystick waggling, but it's a decent conversion and scored well on it's release. If you have patience and a wrist of iron then this may well be the game for you.
