The way I stretched the game out, was by going through the actual monitor settings. This is done by clicking on the buttons which is physically placed on your monitor.

If you scroll through the settings you might find a setting which under Aspect Ratio - here I changed the settings from 4:3 to 16:9 - which stretched the picture out, so that it filled the entire screen.
I do know that I've seen these features in the GraphicsCard program which is on your computer (e.g Catalyst Control Center, Intel HD Graphic etc) which means that it should be possible to go that path as well! :)
