I'm showing some measures I have taken to make the VIC 20 (hopefully) survive longer. Replacing the electrolytic capacitors and heatsinking some of the chips.

It is also a good idea (and I forgot to mention it) to use a replacement power supply. I'm currently using the one I made for my C64. You can see the video here: https://youtu.be/wWOU2sZv_ng

Shortly after shooting this video, the little bridge rectifier in my VC 20 died (was overheating and drawing too much current when warm). I replaced it for a beefier one. It is probably a good idea to do this before it fails as preventive maintenance, too.

Make sure to check out the "addendum" video where I show some more things you better do: https://youtu.be/5BxT7ArlldA

Here's a list of the capacitors (and other parts) in the VIC 20: https://console5.com/wiki/Commodore_VIC-20

I'm using these heatsinks. They seem to be good value for money (eBay Germany link): http://www.ebay.de/itm/8-Stück-VGA-RAM-Kühler-I-Cooler-Selbstklebend-Aluminium-Heatsink/121997702605

You can get a very decent SD2IEC from https://www.tfw8b.com.
