With intelligence on the Wehrmacht's weakening support, the Red Army might have cleared the city by breaking German supply lines. To that end, Isakovich and a single recon squad pushed into enemy territory to search for German maps and documents revealing Wehrmacht position and supply routes. The risks were great, but Isakovich foresaw greater rewards – a battle won decisively, and Soviet lives spared.
