Contra: Shattered Soldier / 真魂斗羅 Machine Gun only (All Stages) Speedrun in 35:11
16Met my goal time so I feel satisfied to post this on YouTube as my first upload of this speedrun category.
Some notes about this run: I use the Machine Gun exclusively which includes its charge attack the Bullet Pod. This forces you to use what I call "Full Partial Charges" - these are charge shots released just before full charge. They do significant damage - but the timing for them is a bit strict; about 3-4 frame window (out of 60fps). If you release late you get a Bullet Pod which is often not preferred, and if you release early you get significantly less damage, I think the next step down for partial charge damage is 20% of a full partial charge. Therefore this run relies on the FPCs. By using FPCs you can still kill bosses and various targets very quickly, as one would using the Energy Shot aka the Flame Thrower's charge.
The reason I did this challenge run is because I wanted to learn more about how this game works and this run really taught me a lot of new things about the game. As well as showed me a new way to play the game that is in fact quite skillful and technical - when you are using FPCs constantly and are punished for missing the timing in dealt damage.
I may post a couple more PBs for this category but this run should demonstrate what Machine Gun only play is all about, and the power of the FPC (Full Partial Charge) mechanic as well as the utility of Bullet Pods and plain Machine Gun usage.
