AKA Cotton Rock 'n' Roll. This is a brand new Cotton game from Success and Studio Saizensen, who's best known for their work on the Umihara Kawase games. They hadn't worked on a shmup before, so it may come as a surprise to some that this game is excellent. It's one of the most fun shmups in years, and quite possibly the best game in the Cotton series. It was released in Japan at the end of last year, and it's coming out in the west this spring for the PS4 and Switch, with a Steam version arriving a little later. Strictly Limited Games also has a collector's edition up for pre-order with a ton of extras, by the way. I bought the Japanese LE, and the Nendoroid and history book it comes with are really nice.

This game is packed with content. There are a lot of different characters to choose from, and a bunch of stages you can tackle in any order you want. I'm only playing the stages that are in the original arcade version in this run, but in the console version, each character has an unlockable stage that's related to the series they come from. So Cotton has a throwback stage for the original Cotton game, Ria has a Psyvariar stage, Kawase has an Umihara Kawase stage, and so on. It's a really cool and ambitious idea, and I'm glad they pulled it off.

The scoring system is the real highlight of this game for me, though. It's really fun to play around with, figuring out which magic is best on each section, where you should die for a magic refill, where to use your bombs, and which stage order is ideal for your character.

I've been playing this game for the last couple of weeks, and so far I've only used Cotton. I haven't even tried the other characters or any of the console stages yet, so there's still a ton of stuff for me to dig in to. This run had a lot of mistakes in it, but I'm starting to feel like trying out the rest of the game. Maybe I'll come back to her later.
