In my defense, I played all 3 Crackdown games before 2020. But do we make excuses for playing Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row?
C2 is fine, if you stick to unlocking the tactical location points and ignore the poorly designed side missions (horde modes, for example). The problem with Crackdown 2 is not that the open world competition got better. The problem is that most of Crackdown 2's objectives are poorly designed. The beacon and freak breach missions are interminable horde mode challenges that are three times longer than they need to be. The only really satisfying challenges are the "tactical location" takeover missions.
And it must be noted that the original game's "hunting" missions cannot be found in this sequel's early game (based on the 10 hours I played). The first game was based almost entirely on assassination missions that were sandboxes requiring creativity, tactical planning, and mob control. The sequel is based almost entirely on reaching waypoints, picking off a predetermined number of enemies, or keeping hordes from doing too much damage to a stationary asset. There is very little creativity and planning required. Just endurance.
