Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back 100% - Part 1
Part 1 in my 100% walkthrough for Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back.
Includes the introductory level, all gems/crystals for the first world (including the slide/jump/spin/bellyflop glitch for the Red Gem), the first boss and the secret entrance to Snow Go, to go the 'normal' route for obtaining the Red Gem.
The first level has a Blue Gem up for grabs, the only way to get it is to get to the end of the level without breaking a box. The Box Gem only really has one tricky part, the secret area where you bellyflop to reach. You'll have to jump over the Flamingo type creatures quickly to get the boxes.
The second level has a relatively easy Box Gem, and take note of the ice, sliding on it is the fastest speed obtainable in the game. The Red Gem is seemingly unreachable, but by sliding off the metal crate (you have to spin just before you hit it) and then jumping spinning and bellyflopping you can get it. It will take a few attempts mind you, and I take the legitimate route to get it at the end of the video.
The third level has two standard Gems, I usually refer to them as Box Gems (for getting all the boxes) and Clear Gems, for clearing a specific route on the level, or doing it under certain conditions. Get the Clear Gem first, you have to be quick, though a neat trick is to die on the bonus stage. It will reset the timer, but you won't see it. Should buy you another 20 seconds or so.
For the Box Gem you need to take the Blue Gem route. Hopefully, whilst getting the Clear Gem you didn't hit any checkpoints after the timer started, otherwise enjoy backtracking/doing the level again.
There's only a Box Gem in the fourth level, but you have to backtrack to get it. Take the left route at the fork, hit the ! box and backtrack after obtaining the Crystal. I back track because the path is easier, and you've taken out some of the enemies along the way. Go along the right fork and get all the boxes.
The fifth level is the first boulder chase type level. I think this perspective is probably the hardest to deal with in Crash, as you have less time to deal with obstacles. The only really difficult crates for the Box Gem are right at the end, where you may catch the electric fence, and you don't want to do that, because you don't get masks in these types of levels.
The boss is Ripper Roo. A lot easier than Crash 1. The TNT won't harm him, but Nitro will knock him out for you to hit and damage him. His paths are fairly predictable to be honest.
Finally.... Time for the secret entrance to Snow Go. Head to Air Crash and advance until you see a line of crates near the Jet Ski thing. Use them to hop to that platform to the right, and you'll be taken to the secret warp room. Finding the Warp gives you 1% extra completion, but you have to complete it anyway to return to the normal way. The route isn't too hard thankfully, and you'll fall down to where the Red Gem was, and end the level.
As you'll see in the next part, Air Crash is quite a secretive level, not only does it give you access to the Warp Room, but there's also a 'Death Route' for the Clear Gem, and access to it from another level via a secret level in the Warp Room, which is required to get the Box Gem.
