To get a critical hit on the sword, you have to hit in on the left or right side. If Genesis Avatar has less then half hp, he will use Purgatorial Wave (Wall is needed if your max hp is too low like mines). If he has more then half, he will use Shadow Flare, which is very hard to evade. Darkness is a huge help against mobs.
