The extras aren't all that useful, the best I have yet been able to command them to do is use the Frenzy Band (or Rage Band, if you want 50% instead of 70% counterattack rate) and retaliate when attacked, treat them as meatshields, and occasionally attack much faster than normally possible. The one you normally command is the third one, and all spells/techs you cast get channeled through his or her MP pool.

The Pro Action Replay codes used:
7E298000 (tells game to put Crono in the first slot.)
7E298100 (tells game to put Crono is the second slot.)
7E298200 (tells game to put Crono in the third slot.)

Some experimentation later:
Character codes:
00 = Crono
01 = Marle
02 = Lucca
03 = Robo
04 = Frog
05 = Ayla
06 = Magus
07 = 'The Old Man' (It bugs out, don't use it.)
08+ = Bugs out.
EE = Empty, only useful in battle to remove party members. CAN be used to remove first slot, but bugs the game out if used on the map. Thus, you should only use this value if you are fighting a string of battles, such as Zeal to Mammon Machine to Zeal in the Black Omen or the Geno Dome conveyor belt. NOT the Lavos Shell boss rush, because those require you to move around to continue the fights.

Let's say you don't know how to use these Pro Action Replay codes in your emulator. Well, find your cheat screen, and follow the instruction there. To assemble a Pro Action Replay code, you need to know two things:
The Address of the bit you wish to change
and the Value you wish to assign that bit.

The address that controls the first character slot is 7E2980. Ordinarily, this is handled by your party selection screen. Since you probably have someone not Ayla in this slot, to force the game to load her, place the Address in the code entry field, then the Value. The completed code should look like 7E298005.

This can be done for any slot and any character, like so:

Magus third slot: 7E298206
Crono second slot: 7E298100
Frog first slot: 7E298004
