(Custom) Rotary Spark Gap Test

I think I understand now why Nikola Tesla complained that before his invention of the Brushless Motor, all electric motors used commutators that caused sparks. It seemed strange to me to learn that Tesla actually complained about sparks? But to my understanding now that in order to use the Rotary Spark Gap, a Brushless Motors as far as I can tell is required for operation.
