Nerdarchy breaks down the CR system for 5e D&D. WOTC has brought back the challenge rating system from 3rd edition dungeons and dragons but it is still heavily influenced from A&D&D's XP system. The current XP system is a hybrid of all editions of dungeons and dragons. The one issue I did find is if you are familiar with the challenge rating system from 3.5 it can be confusing.
