Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony [Part 59] The End of Friendship [FINALE]
Here we are with the final part of Danganronpa V3! All these parts were FTEs and playing the board game, but I hope you enjoyed getting to know all the characters I couldn't finish in the base game. I could keep going with the board game but I think I'll just do that on my own and come back with it when I get around to playing Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp. Which I'll just say now: I'm a bit danganronpa'd out, so don't expect that to start any time soon. I plan to start Umineko When They Cry Question Arcs next week though, if you're in the market for another murder mystery, and if that's not your thing and you want something a little closer to Danganronpa? I'm also planning to start Raging Loop sometime in the near future. If not, see ya whenever I play Danganronpa S!
Anyways heres my thoughts on V3 as a whole.
Hoo.
I'm not quite sure of my opinion on this game to be honest? I enjoyed the cast enough, and the trials continued to get more complex but i'm left feeling... awkward. I was hoping it wouldn't pull another Danganronpa 2 and have the twist be no one dies which... it kinda did? I wanted something more based in reality like Danganronpa 1 did. The reveal at the end left me feeling a bit disappointed, but I saw it coming a mile away with all the context clues I picked up on, even back in Chapter 1.
Again, im sorry for the comparisons, but the cast of this game felt less close than danganronpa 1 or 2. It felt like there were less bonding moments between the entire cast. Sure, there were cliques, like Maki, Shuichi and Kaito or Angie, Himiko and Tenko. But the general group dynamic of this cast did not feel close. And in a way I think part of that is because Kaede died. Felt like at the start, she could connect the cast, but her death kinda pushed that feeling of connectivity away for me. I felt like there were so many more events in the first 2 games that showed the entire cast engaging in things together for fun that were neither forced experiences not everyone was down for or an optional event if you have a specific item at a specific time and given to a specific character.
Also, just not a fan of the localization of this game. Gonta and Angie are the biggest offenses for me, but also learning about Kaitos Japanese characterization made a bit of my likening to his translated lines lose a bit of a genuine feeling if that makes sense. I hated the shoehorned in memes, especially when they got political, and I just hated a lot of the "humor" of this game. I do not enjoy incest jokes and this game... had so many. I also do not like nonconsensual content framed in a sexual manner, which again, this game had a lot of.
Also on the subject of FTE's it felt like a lot of them were flops this time. a lot of them just felt like anime or video game reference backstories, or just missed the mark on what could have made a characters backstories interesting. For those that never read Prince of Tennis for example, Ryomas backstory could look cool. But as a fan of Prince of Tennis, his entire character backstory felt very reliant on Ryoma Echizen and plot points of that manga. Meanwhile on the other spectrum, I had hope for characters like Miu or Tenko getting interesting backstories to better explain well, why they are the way they are? But I left both feeling dissatisfied at it not really giving anything deep. There were definitely some banger FTEs though don't get me wrong. Like, I really did enjoy Ouma and Makis for example. But just so many FTEs felt heartless knockoffs or unsatisfactory for the amount of effort to unlock them in this game compared to past titles.
Post game content is very fun, and ive been playing bits of it since beating this, and I know I'll continue to have fun in prepping my characters and going through monokumas dungeons!
Sorry, I'm sure a lot of this just reads that I hated Danganronpa V3. I don't think I do, but my problems do make it a kinda meh game for me. I don't regret playing it, and enjoyed a lot of moments. But also a lot of this games content left a bad taste in my mouth. I think this game especially suffered from the plot rule of 3's. When a game series follows a similar structure 3 times, I begin to notice more laziness for characterizations in the 3rd game, as well as rehashing to the point of it being a bit boring. While I do like Persona 5, I feel like it, as the 3rd Daily Life Persona game, also suffered from similar plot and character beats that this game does.
If we ever do get another main Danganronpa game I hope they take players criticisms into thought.
