The main Touhou games tend to be fairly formulaic, if with a few twists thrown in here and there, but every once in a while, one of them does something more unusual. This is that every once in a while.

Instead of fighting through waves of enemies in a series of stages that include a midboss and end in a stage boss, PoFV puts more of a Tetris Attack twist on the gameplay, as two characters fight off generic enemies in separate side-by-side regions until one or the other runs out of health. Special attacks mainly dump more bullets on the enemy side of the screen, and can be charged up through four increasingly effective levels if you have enough energy, with the fourth level summoning a copy of your character to act similarly to a standard boss on the opponent's side of the screen.

There's also a field around you when you focus, with different shapes and sizes depending on character, but I forget exactly what it does. Something to do with redirecting certain bullets or the spirits floating around, I think?

Story mode has one player fighting a series of computer-controlled opponents until finally reaching someone who knows what's actually going on. The game also supports local multiplayer, and a fan-made patch allows for netplay.

Additionally, this game is the source of Cirno's "nineball" (or "maru kyuu" in Japanese) nickname, as she's marked as ⑨ on an explanatory graphic in the manual, which the legend indicates is バカ ("idiot").

Story synopsis, from the wiki: Spring has arrived, but something is wrong. Flowers are blooming and the fairies are becoming active as usual, but the amount of flowers and fairies is unnatural; even non-spring flowers are blooming.
