Welcome to GhotiBowl, a review/analysis/comedy series directed towards fans of media analysis and to aspiring creators who wish to improve their craft. In each episode of GhotiBowl, I will be going through one or more pieces of media and offering critique from the viewpoint of a long-term fan of storytelling in media. Many episodes of GhotiBowl feature one specific theme or topic and frame it around the media in question, offering insight on how that piece of media uses or fails to utilize the concept discussed by the video.
In this episode, we're going to take a look at the film Scooby Doo on Zombie Island, directed by Jim Stenstrum and animated by Mook Animation, released by Warner Bros. Films in 1998. Scooby Doo on Zombie Island explores the idea of the colorful cast of Scooby Doo being dropped into a darker, more mature adult world. Taking place an unspecified number of years after the old TV show, the Scooby Doo gang are now all adults, who have gone their separate ways in life. They reunite when Daphne's paranormal TV show is determined to find evidence of real ghosts for it's second season, causing the gang to travel around Louisiana in search of real monsters. Their search for the supernatural leads them to the mansion of Simone and Lena, located on the secluded Moonscar Island, which they claim is really haunted. What will the Scooby Doo gang find on Moonscar Island? Can Simone be trusted, or is she just a crazy cat lady who thinks she sees monsters in the walls? Stay tuned to find out!
