Part 4. Damn this game is awesome. I don't think it's as amazing as the first game, but it truly is a gem. The only thing that really hinders this game is a lack of a map, but honestly considering how linear a lot of the game is, it's largely unnecessary. I just jotted some notes and locations down to come back to later and that saved me a ton of mindless searching. First off, the graphics are pretty darn nice. You still have the super stylized characters, but the environments look even better. It's some sort of combination of real and cartoon-ish looking. I really dig the aesthetics. The environments are all really well designed and varied. It's a ton of fun to explore every nook and cranny and locate all the buried secrets. I played the game on reckoning and the difficulty felt pretty fair. I died a lot, but that's par for the course. The combat still felt super snappy and I loved the perfect dodge. It took some time to get used to and learn some enemy patterns, but after a while I was doing decently. The dodge doesn't give you enough movement to run away from enemies and they can close distance crazy easy, so trying to get some space to heal in hairy situations can be rough. One of the biggest issues is that you really aren't built for combat with a lot of enemies so I found myself trying to just single out enemies and fight them 1-on-1. I wish the whip had some better moves to hit multiple enemies. Speaking of weapons as you progress you unlock some pretty neat and helpful weapons, which I almost never used. I got used to using the fire hollow knives and that was largelt it. They are the first ability you unlock and I never really looked back at any others. I liked their speed and their counter. Plus that blazing hair was just fire. The game does a solid job bridging the combat of Darskiders past games which emulate a more God of War style and Dark Souls more punishing enemies. It felt good. I really like how each game has taken a genre and done their own thing with it. Gone are the more Zelda style dungeons and puzzles, which may disappoint some, but I didn't mind it. You now just have large areas, tough enemies and platforming, with some small environmental puzzling. You are rewarded pretty handsomely for exploring and returning to areas with new abilities, whether you get items that you can use to level up your weapons, find people to save, or get enhancements. The enhancements work as upgradeable accessories for your weapons. They all have 2 buffs, one that's passive and another that's only applied to that specific weapon. As you go you acquire materials that you can use to power them up. They are in limited supply so choosing the enhancements that benefit your play style is pretty important. I really enjoyed exploring and finding how the world was connected. At first it seems that each branching path is it's own separate thing, but as you get more abilities and are able to see more of the world you find that areas are connected in a very clever way. The bosses are also pretty darn fun and can be very hard at times. I really struggled with Avarice at first, he had a stomp ability that I just couldn't figure out the timing to. I left went and fought another boss. Came back with some upgrades and stomped him into the ground. Most of the bosses were really cool. The DLC Keepers of the Void brings back the dungeons and puzzles that were eschewed in this game. Lots of cool puzzles and tricky platforming to be found there, though some of the bosses are a bit too similar. The final boss of the DLC was probably my favorite in the entire game. He had some attacks that would 1-shot me and I really had to learn how to fight him. It was super satisfying. The Crucible makes a return and boy are the later stages hard. I did manage to get through them but not before knocking the difficulty down, but raised it back up to fight Wicked K. I loved this game and it really scratched an itch I didn't know I needed scratched. Enjoy my blind playthrough.
