In this lecture/discussion video from my Spring 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class, we start our study of David Hume's Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion. We being with some preliminary matters, talking about why Hume wrote a dialogue, what his rhetorical purposes were in setting up such a debate, and some of the background assumptions of Hume's empiricist philosophy. We also explore some of the difficulties in acquiring knowledge about religious matters, and begin to explore Design or Teleological arguments about God's existence and God's nature.
