Day 3 (Hard Mode) - Dead Space REMAKE - Finding Nicole and escaping Ishimura
Dead Space is a game that brings back fond memories. Whilst released in 2008, I played the original in January 2012, exactly 11 years ago, getting 38 of the 48 achievements on offer and spending nearly two weeks slowly progressing through the game after a tough day at work.
And what a game it was! Taking inspiration from Survival Horror monolith Resident Evil, freakish creature design philosophy from The Thing, and the sci-fi horror of cult classics Event Horizon and Solaris, Dead Space further revolutionised the horror genre with the foundations set out by Resident Evil 4.
With the enclosed, claustrophobic corridors, one could find themselves easily overwhelmed by multiple necromorphs. But fear not, with protagonist Isaac Clarke at the helm and his trusty plasma cutter by his side, survival would be possible. By aiming the plasma cutter at necromorph limbs, Isaac could dismember them, reducing their mobility and allowing him to get the killing blow on an enemy, a highly innovative feature for 2008!
And now, in 2023, we finally have the long awaited Dead Space Remake. Creator of the original Dead Space, Glen Schofield, released The Callisto Protocol in December 2022 to mixed reviews including performance issues, questionable melee combat and too many death animations breaking the momentum in gameplay when dying. I personally enjoyed the game, but agree that it does not meet the levels of Dead Space 1 and 2.
The remake has received ultimately positive reviews, citing that the game is not only faithful to the original, but tastefully expands on the 2008 classic. Will I enjoy the game? Will there be glaring omissions in the story or simplification of certain combat sections and/or set-pieces? Will the remake triumph over The Callisto Protocol and be the true return of Dead Space? Will Dead Space Remake be the best, faithful remake since Resident Evil Remake, released all the way back in 2002?
All I know is that I'm excited to find out, and hope that you join me as I writhe in fear.
