I compared my 2:50 and 2:51 runs here. My 2:51 run was ahead for the entire run. On the very last screen, I regained all the time and the 2:50 run pulls slightly ahead. The final boss can make or break it.

Is a 2:49 run possible? Looks like we'd need to perfect every tiny thing, but it might just be barely possible...not entirely sure though. My 2:50 run is absolutely a very high 2:50.
