Descent - Level 16 (Part 2) - Insane, No Deaths, No Mid-Level Saves, Full Rescue Run
Platform robots make their first appearance here. Fortunately, it's mostly the laser armed ones, with only one missile armed one appearing in the reactor room. The laser armed ones pretty much amount to being slightly-harder-to-hit, slightly-more-durable class 2 drones (the little blue laser guys), but they pose little to no real threat.
This level is still difficult nonetheless. A few problem points of note:
- The large pit room past the blue access door. Two red hulks are lurking around under the energy station, and usually are in free-roam mode by the time you get there. Recharging is impossible to do safely until they're eliminated, as the large open areas offer no cover. I luck out this run in that they show themselves fairly quickly.
- The area past the yellow door. A couple drillers, medium hulks, and a red hulk wandering around in a tight space. Obviously spells trouble. Cloaking devices need to be utilized carefully.
- The area past the red door. A number of red hulks are scattered in the wide hallways, but fortunately they rarely go wandering. The reactor room is difficult to get through, but an invulnerability can be used to make it easier. Escaping the mines is actually quite difficult if you don't farm out the spawn, so I save a cloaking device to slip past the spawning drillers and hulks. In retrospect, farming out the spawns wouldn't have been too difficult to do, and would have netted me more points.
I lucked out this run in that a LOT of cloaking devices dropped. The rate for getting those is usually much lower, but I was really able to benefit from them enough to clear the level without much issue.
