Descent - Level 19 (Part 1) - Insane, No Deaths, No Mid-Level Saves, Full Rescue Run
9Forgive me for my generally slow pace on this level. This one is BY FAR the hardest level in the game, in my opinion. The concentric circle layout of each floor means that if an enemy goes wandering, they might come at you from ANY direction.
Clearing out the first floor takes a lot of energy. It's to the point where I swap to vulcan at several points for taking out weaker enemies to conserve enough energy to get by until the recharge station on the second floor.
Getting the blue key requires you take out two heavy drillers through a grated wall on opposite sides. If you neglect to do so, collecting the yellow key is incredibly difficult (though possible with mega missile spam), as the spawn will go unchecked and flood the room with small hulks and heavy drillers. But managing to hit them through the grates without getting hit yourself is tricky. Going into the passage will trigger the spawn, but shooting from outside it gives you a really awkward angle.
By the time you reach the second floor (past the blue door), most enemies there will have had plenty of time to start free-roaming, and aside from the couple of small hulks and lifters, they're ALL highly dangerous, consisting of heavy drillers, red hulks, and missile-armed platformers. Getting blind sided by any of those is usually instant death.
The area with the red key is possibly even worse, with awkward, jagged, cramped hallways which make evasive maneuvers pretty much impossible. And the enemies are also still high threats, consisting of medium hulk, heavy drillers, and a red hulk. Again, it's partly a matter of luck of encountering the enemies at the right time and place.
The reactor room is actually comparatively tame (though I still screw it up because this was the first run where I made it that far, and I didn't know what to expect), consisting of a large open space with a couple red hulks and a large amount of heavy drillers.
Long story short, this level took several DAYS worth of attempts to clear. Ugh.
