Ascendant materials refers to two items, ascendant shards and ascendant energy. You use the former to upgrade your legendary armor and Exotic armor you will also need it to upgrade your legendary weapons and exotic weapons respectively. As upgrading your armor and weapons gives increased defense, damage and light, this is obviously something you want to do and will be essential to reaching level 30 and completing the most challenging game content.

Story:
