Back Up is a game about leveling 'down' as opposed to 'up'. The idea here is that you are a dungeon boss that is looking to retire; but you certainly can't do so with all this epic gear you have equipped. You thus begin to head out of the dungeon, trading your gear for that of your defeated foes.

Your level is based on the gear that you have equipped and if your level is too high you won't be able to ascend staircases that are 5 dungeon levels below your character level rating. It is a neat idea - although that is all there is to it which is why I won't be spotlighting this one.
