Alright, I wanted to get into the Persona series since I've never played any of the games before, so I decided to play every SMT game in order of release. Seems like it aaaalll started right here, in the dungeon crawler realm. I began this game knowing absolutely nothing about it, and despite liking dungeon crawlers a lot, I do think this one could benefit from better enemy balancing and less random encounter rates. In this part I was still playing without a guide, but eventually I just needed one to make any progress at all. Game's cryptic as hell. I didn't look up maps though, only what I had to do because I wanted to have at least some amount of self-discovery satisfaction in this.
This part mostly takes place in Daedalus Tower, where I was getting used to the mechanics of the game and learning how to play. I will say, the idea of taming demons and fusing them blew my mind, especially for a game that came out over 10 years before Pokémon! Dungeon design is deliberately confusing, and initially I started mapping everything out in graph paper, but after the game began to throw teleport pads and multiple disconnected areas in the same floor at me, I gave up and decided to just rely on my memory instead, which actually made the whole game a LOT more enjoyable. You'd be surprised how good your memory becomes at remembering identical-looking labyrinths once you spend so much time in them. However, I ended up going to Valhalla Path instead of Sky City where I was supposed to, so I had a lot of trouble fighting very strong demons for my level then.
