DiRT Rally : Flying Finland Update
Moar below bro! Wait, this ain't Rallycross anymore so we don't need to say "bro" as often as we can. Read the description please, sir / madam.

What I say:
Finland is a whole bunch of win. Duh. There is no way to make a reasonably realistic (this batch is modeled after the ultra well known Ouninpohja stage) Finnish stage bad, it cannot be done. The recipe is simple : really fast, tons of jumps, lotsa trees. You know, what makes rally totally friggin awesome.
Mouse support needs - and should be getting - work. You can right click to exit a menu, but you still need to press enter to get into the main menu from the splash screen, still need to press enter to start loading an event, still need to use the keyboard in replays. But again, it's a step in the right direction.
15 seconds to get back on track, up 5 from 10 previously. Seems about right to me - had too many moments where I got back on track in 11 seconds. :)
On to handling : this is the big non content thing for this update, and the cars that are updated to V2 status (60s, 70s, 80s RWD, 2000s and 2010s) show a certain improvement. The other cars will be updated in a future update.
(This is where I - as someone who said numerous times the handling was goofy and needed work - must note I am laughing at the people who kept claiming it was correct before this update.)
(This is where I also - as someone who said numerous times the handling was goofy and needed work - must also say thank you to Codemasters for actually working on it and making an improvement.)
First thing after the update, I took the E30 M3 to the Wales - Sweet Lamb stage. Car I'm most familiar with and like most on my favorite stage in the game. I knew it pretty well. Key word is "knew" - it's totally different now. This pretty much sums up the new handling -
I spun out from putting too much throttle into the thing in the first left hander. I've never done that before, honestly! While before I was stuck on rails and could drive that stage nearly blind, now that is not the case. Way more willing to slide and way more happy while doing so, as you would expect a RWD car on gravel to do. It was and is incredibly fun and challenging - I can't wait until the RWD Group B cars get updated!
Brakes actually work properly and don't feel incredibly "overpowered" now. I think the problem was there was too much "drag" - too much rolling resistance and too much engine drag / braking, which would explain the incredibly slow rev building in the V1 handling / engine model. Hairpins are a lot easier to navigate post update because of all of this.
One other thing on the handling - cars now REALLY fly. It's actually kind of borderline silly IMO how some of the cars fly. The WRC type of cars seem fine to me, but cars like the old Escort almost launch into the stratosphere.
Coupled with the lackluster damage modelling in this game... ehh. Hopefully realistic damage is on the plate.
Anyways, the hang time you get though does have a nice side effect - "reading the road" is more critical now. Bumps will upset the car more than what you would see previously, so you really need to pay attention to where those bumps are.
There isn't a single car with the new handling I've driven after the update that doesn't feel better and drive in a more believable and engaging manner. It's almost akin from going from one of the previous DiRT titles to DiRT Rally again. Really, I feel like it's a big change, and I've become addicted to the game because of it. LOL
I won't say it's perfect, but it's pretty dang good and with everything else this game has going on... (no one has better RWD rally cars, not even the almighty RBR)
I'm a fan.
