The Power Of Yamato . World Of Warships . TSUSHIMA .Yamato (大和?) was a battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. She was leader of the Yamato class and along with her sister ship, Musashi, was the heaviest and most heavily armed battleship ever built thanks to her displacement of 72,800 tons fully loaded and her nine 460 mm guns.

Named after the former Japanese province of Yamato, the ship was laid down on November 4, 1937 and formally delivered a week after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The Yamato was designed to face a similar ship artillery characteristics or several smaller units of the United States Navy, the main maritime rival of the Empire of Japan in the Pacific. However, paradoxically the attack on Pearl Harbor forever buried the concept of battleship supremacy .
Throughout 1942 she acted as the flagship of the Japanese Combined Fleet, and in June 1942 Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto directed the disastrous Battle of Midway for Japan from her bridge. Musashi replaced her as flagship of the Combined Fleet in early 1943, and Yamato spent the rest of that year and much of 1944 moving between the Truk Islands and the port of Kure in response to American threats. Despite being present in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, Yamato did not participate in it, and the only occasion on which she fired her main guns at enemy surface targets was in October 1944, when she was sent to attack the forces Americans who invaded the Philippine Islands during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. On the brink of victory, Japanese forces retreated, believing they were facing an entire American transport fleet rather than a small escort group, which was all that stood between the Yamato and the vulnerable troop transports.

During 1944 the balance of naval power in the Pacific tilted against Japan, and at the beginning of 1945 the Japanese fleet had to remain in port due to critical fuel shortages. In April of this last year, in a desperate attempt to stop the Allied advance, the Yamato was sent to the island of Okinawa with the mission of trying to protect it from the invasion and fight until the end. However, US Navy submarines and aircraft carriers discovered her battle group south of Kyushu, and on 7 April 1945 she was attacked and sunk by bomber and torpedo planes from a US aircraft carrier, leading to the Death of most of his crew.

Decades after the war, the battleship Yamato has been remembered in Japan with monuments, a museum, replicas, animated series and films, a sign of its extraordinary importance in the culture of the country of the rising sun.
