Dishonored - Part 1
I am not well known for stealth. However, the community have been suggesting this gets played for a long while, so I was quite looking forward to it considering I knew little about it. It's a first person stealth that takes place in the fictional city of Dunwall, which looks like an industrial version of Victorian England. There are several threats to its inhabitants as plague rats attack, and assassination plots are rife in order to gain political power. You play Corvo - the bodyguard to the Empress Jessamine and her daughter Emily. Corvo is framed for the assassination of Jessamine, and is locked up whilst the evil Lord Regent assumes the throne and takes Emily prisoner. The Loyalist faction break him out, and send him on missions in a bid to put Emily back on the throne. You are also assisted by the Outsider, who grants you magical abilities in order to complete these missions
The game is a first person stealther, and you have a lot of freedom in how you take down each level's target - either by sneaking, jumping and patiently climbing undetected in order to take them down by nonlethal means - or by embracing chaos and stabbing, shooting and murdering your way through the game. What is excellent is that the game adapts as you proceed depending on your playstyle and bodycount. The more you kill, the darker and harder the story becomes - If you choose to spare lives then the later missions are easier - It's reminiscent of The Sorrow's boss fight on MGS3, but done in a unique way. The gameplay itself is fantastic, with parrying and shooting handling very well - as well as the various powers that you will use to navigate the areas.
It is visually striking and I love the art direction that Arkane took - It very much reminds me of Bioshock meeting Victorian steampunk environments with cartoonish impressionist characters filling the game. The ensemble cast was a welcome surprise with Brad Douriff, Lena Heady, Susan Sarandon, Michael Madsen and Carrie Fisher among the household names. I didn't have many griopes with this game other than it feeling a little dated and short. I had real fun with this.
