Late to the party? Sure, but I never had an Xbox, so I wasn't able to experience Fable the first time round - a shame because I really enjoyed Lionheart's Black & White (the extremely humourous game where you take on the role of a deity in control of your own monster). The biggest question is have I missed out by playing the second in the series years later? Yes and no. The game sees you in the role of a young adventurer from the world of Albion, as he/she and his sister find a powerful relic from years past. The player is left for dead and his sister killed by the evil Lucian who intends to use the device to harness the power of the ancients to take over the world, bring order to humanity, whatever it's an RPG. As an adult you can free roam and explore, take on jobs or quests in order to establish yourself as a renowned hero/villain, and ultimately work towards stopping Lucian.

The game is really as epic as you want to make it - you can either stick to the short linear campaign, or indulge in many different, often comedic side quests and activities. The game doesn't take itself massively seriously, and has the feel of a BBC interactive game considering the british talent it is stacked with - Zoë Wanamaker, Julia Sawalha (from Ab Fab! I knew I recognised her!), Stephen Fry, Alan Ford, and much more. It also has James Corden, sadly (albeit a tiny part). You can buy and rent out property, get married, have kids, upgrade your character's look and equipment, get a job, gamble and much more - minigames vary from complex well-crafted pub games, to simplistic-yet-insanely-addictive jobs like blacksmithing and pulling the perfect serve pints.

Gameplay wise, it feels like Skyrim meeting Ocarina of Time if it was learning to ride a bike. Graphically, it's acceptable apart from the irritating motion blur and the soundtrack is nice enough. Everything else is a little simplistic - combat is hack and slash with the occasional spellcast or long range shot thrown in - and there are no real stakes considering that when you die, you lose a little EXP and are thrown into the action again with no lost progress - and this feels like there's nothing at stake. The expression system is fun for a while as you learn new insults, gestures (FARTS), seduction techniques (leading to marriage or unprotected ex) and tricks for your dog - The system can often be used with hilarious results. The main campaign is woefully short and simplictic with an ending that ultimately falls flat, but the journey is fun and packed with British humour.

For me, its low difficulty, candor and light heartedness contrasting with adult themes raises the question on the target audience? Children? Adults? Teens? Regardless of this, I enjoyed my time with Fable II and although it hasn't aged particularly well I would score it 7.5 out of 10. However (and I'm deadly serious), I will knock a point off for the inclusion of James Corden.
