Hello Guys

Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT is a pretty interesting title in many regards. The product itself is a crossover game with characters from the highly popular Final Fantasy series, and while it is somewhat of a sequel to the Dissidia series on PSP from about 10 years ago, it's really more of a reimagining of it.

The gameplay itself has become quite different, though similar at its core, though the biggest shakeup by far is that it is no longer a one-on-one game, but a 3v3 title, and not in the Marvel vs. Capcom or Dragon Ball FighterZ sense. No, this is a game where 6 human players divide themselves up into two teams and have a huge arena to do battle against eachothers.

The closest thing we've seen to this in the competitive fighting game scene before was back at EVO 2012, when Street Fighter X Tekken was a fairly new title, and the main stage had it played as a 2v2 game, meaning that four players were present within each match.

This is a much different beast than that, though, because Dissidia itself has been brought up in many discussions across the internet, including in our own comments section here, discussing whether it actually qualifies as a fighting game or not.

It's certainly not a traditional fighter, with a vastly open field where the characters do battle, and even less so because of the fact that six players are involved, but it's definitely competitive, and while it's hard to nail down a specific genre for it, I do believe there's a place for it within the larger fighting game community.

What I believe even more, however, is that there's a place for this title in eSports, and I also think that's where Square-Enix are hoping to bring it.

To start off my reasoning as to why Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT might take off as an eSports title, let me regail you with a story of an old online friend of mine from way back in my World of Warcraft days. Even though I stopped playing the game well over 10 years ago, me and said friend still keep in touch over social media, and a few years back he got interested in competitive fighting games, mostly the Super Smash Bros. series.

Since he knows that I work with fighting games and that I'm acquaintances with TSM|Leffen, who at that time hadn't been picked up by TSM yet, this friend wrote me and talked about how the big eSports team CLG, Counter Logic Gaming, was looking to expand into Smash and his hopes that they'd pick up Leffen due to how extremely well he was doing at the moment.

A few weeks later, the official news broke that Leffen had been picked up by TSM, Team Solo Mid, and I wrote my friend expecting him to be happy that Leffen had now become a properly sponsored player, but his response was not at all what I expected. "Well, if he's TSM I can't root for him", my friend said. "They're rivals to my team, CLG".
