This is where I got the buttons and joystick... (I got 2 sets)
https://www.amazon.com/Easyget-Joystick-Encoder-Support-Windows/dp/B00YIXD9OY/ref=sr_1_30?keywords=diy+arcade+zero+delay&qid=1556588896&s=gateway&sr=8-30

I didn't have any particular reason to pick this one out of the many choices. ...just picked something with mostly good reviews. I didn't want a version with light up buttons because I just don't care about that so it'd be a waste.

The "box" was a Dewalt cordless drill case.

I used hole saws to make the holes. ...just picked whichever size was big enough to fit in there and small enough that the "lip" didn't fit through. If i remember right the big holes are 1 1/4'', and the small ones.... uhh... I don't remember. ...just hold the button up to the hole saw and look.
