The brush is a contact flexible-articulated cold weapon of shock-crushing action.
It is a shock weight (bone, metal or stone weight - beater), connected by a flexible suspension (chain, belt or strong rope), with a handle (mostly wooden) - a brush. Due to their low cost and efficiency, brushes were widely used in the 10th-17th centuries in Europe and Asia as infantry and cavalry weapons, and were used on a limited scale even later.
A weapon that consists of a shock weight attached to a gimbal, but lacks a handle, is usually also called a flail. However, a number of sources note that since it has a different design and is significantly different in the technique of use, it should be considered as a separate type of weapon - extinguished.
The term "flail" is also sometimes used to refer to combat flails. Since combat flails and flails are similar in design, it is difficult to draw a clear line between them. As a rule, the weight of the load and the length of the handle of the flail is greater than that of the flail, and the length of the suspension is much shorter.
Morgenstern (German Morgenstern, literally - "morning star") is a melee weapon of shock-crushing action in the form of a metal ball equipped with spikes. Used as tops of clubs or flails. Such a pommel greatly increased the weight of the weapon - the morgenstern itself weighed more than 1.2 kg, which had a strong moral effect on the enemy, frightening him with its appearance.
The so-called chain morgenstern was also widespread, in which a spiked ball was connected to a long handle by means of a chain.
Although the use of the Morgenstern increased the severity of the wounds inflicted on the enemy, it made it very difficult to carry the weapon, its spikes interfered with an accurate hit, clinging to close objects, and often got stuck in shields or armor.
Morgenstern also called a short wooden spiked club or a metal mace with a not very long handle and a spiked ball-shaped beater like a flail. Such weapons were, in particular, in service with the Swiss infantry until the middle of the 15th century. Due to their ease of manufacture, Morgensterns were popular during the peasant wars in Germany. In addition to the infantry morgenstern, there was also a cavalry on a shortened handle. Some cavalry morgensterns were combined with hand beepers.
Used by the Germans until the end of the First World War.
