Reference:
A helicopter is a vertical take-off and landing rotorcraft, in which the lifting and driving (propulsive) forces at all stages of flight are created by one or more main rotors driven by one or several engines.
The outdated name "helicopter" was borrowed from the French language (fr. Hélicoptère) already at the end of the 19th century. In French, in turn, the word is created from the roots of the Greek language (Old Greek ἕλιξ, genitive ἕλικος "spiral, screw" and πτερόν "wing").
The authorship of the word "helicopter" (from "turns" and "flies") belongs to NI Kamov. The earliest document in which the "helicopter" is used is the Minutes of the meeting of the Technical Commission of the Central Council of OSOAVIAKHIM, chaired by B. N. Yuriev, dated February 8, 1929. The meeting of the Commission was devoted to the consideration of the KASKR-1 autogyro project by engineers NI Kamov and NK Skrzhinsky. The new word stuck as a synonym for the word "helicopter", completely replacing it in the late 1940s. The word "gyroplane" remained in the Russian language in its original meaning.
The statement of L.A. Vvedenskaya and N.P. Kolesnikov does not seem to be true that “when an aircraft was invented, which does not need a takeoff run before takeoff, since it is able to rise vertically and fly from any platform, the word“ helicopter “(Vertically + fly)”, especially since the KASKR-1, which is an autogyro, could not rise vertically.
There is also a version that the word "helicopter" was invented and introduced into the Russian language by the Soviet science fiction writer A.P. Kazantsev.
There is a version of the origin of the word "helicopter" from the name of the company-manufacturer of helicopters "Vertol" (the name, in turn, comes from the abbreviation of the term "Vertical Take-off and Landing aircraft" - "vertical take-off and landing aircraft"). In 1959, the Soviet delegation, which included the developer of the first Soviet serial helicopters, M.L. Mil, purchased samples of American Sikorsky S-58 and Vertol V-44 helicopters from the United States. It was from this time that the word "helicopter" in the Russian language finally supplanted the word "helicopter" for these machines.
