D.Luxx Month of NESvember Games:#3: S.C.A.T. (Special Cybernetic Attack Team).
To make amends for last weeks fiasco of a game (ahem), I bring to you a NES game I've never heard of before. When I was looking up NES shmup games, this interesting gem came up, so I thought Id give it a go. And, it plays really well and its pretty fun and decent. Kind of reminds me of Capcom's Forgotten Worlds in a way.
S.C.A.T. (Special Cybernetic Attack Team) for the NES is 1 player or 2 player co op action shmup game that also goes by different titles. Final Mission in Japan and Action in New York in Europe (Very confusing I know) was released in 1990 and developed by Natsume and published by Natsume in the US (the version I'm playing).
Players assume the role of two characters: Player One is Arnold; a skilled soldier and Player Two Sigourney, a female fighter. Gameplay take place on a either a horizontal or vertical scrolling stage, with the two players flying around in eight different directions, killing as many enemies as possible. Gun attacks can only by done front or back and there is a different arsenal of weapon pick ups to gain; from lasers, missiles to bombs. In addition, there is are also two floating orbs that surround the player and act as additional firepower. These can be placed in either free movement or stationary mode. There are five stages in total to complete.
It is the year 2029. Alien invaders led by their evil leader, Vile Malmort have taken control of New York and reduced it to ruins. The invaders then construct a transport Astrotube from New York to their Mothership and prepare to launch a global invasion. A team of cyborg warriors known as the S.C.A.T force are dispatched to eliminate the alien threat.
Here, I do a full playthrough of all stages as cyborg warrior Arnold.
Really neat fun shmup game. Some good music too. I could see myself getting into this game as a kid. Really good and underrated gem for any NES shmup fan to try out.
